Letters, 1861-1901 (bulk 1861-1865).

The correspondence covers the period April 29, 1861-February 13, 1865. The letters are concerned with many aspects of Union army life, including descriptions of skirmishes and battles, and comments on the mental state of soldiers throughout the war. There is also a letter to General J. L. Chamberlain dated April 29, 1901, is included in the collection. It summarizes Whitaker's part in the events of April 9, 1865, when as chief of staff for General George Custer, he was present when General Longstreet first related General Lee's desire to surrender the Army of Northern Virginia.
